Women and Slaves
In Sparta, Women lived the same way that Spartan men did. They wore no jewelry of cosmetics, and just like men, were expected to be strong, healthy, and ready to fight. Women were to look after a man’s items in times of war. She has to guard it from invaders and revolt against slaves. These Spartan women had many more rights than most Greek women had. Slaves had more rights, but not as many as everyone else. They had to do whatever their owners told them to.
Education
The main purpose of education in Sparta was to be sure that they had strong men and women who will protect the city state. If a baby was not healthy or strong, it was left on a hill to die. At age 7, all Spartan children were taught to fight. Both boys and girls received military training. The importance of training was to be a brave soldier. They had to do painful physical tasks. At age 20, a difficult test was given for fitness, military ability, and leadership. If they passed, they became official soldiers and citizens.
Government
The city-state of Sparta was an oligarchy. Like Athens, there was an Assembly. But here, the decisions were made by the Council of Elders. This consisted of two kings and 28 other men. The 28 men were elected by the Assembly. These men had to be at least 60 years of age and come from a noble family to be elected. Once they were elected, they served for life. Their jobs were to come up with laws for the Assembly to vote on. The Assembly was made up of male citizens. It was large and took place in an outdoor area away from the center of the city. They had very little power. They did not debate issues and could vote yes or no to laws.
